Steven
loves to read, and loves to share the information he learns.
here are a few books that Steven either considers classics,
essential reading, or just plan enjoyable. And some might just
be all three!
The
One Minute Manager
by Kenneth Blanchard and Spencer
Johnson
In my
estimation, this remains a classic and provides excellent
guidelines and direction for being a more effective manager.
Whale
Done
by Kenneth Blanchard,
Thad Lacinak, Chuck Tompkins, Jim Ballard
This
continues the excellent work provided by Blanchard over the
years. The concept of catching them doing something right
remains key to his philosophy. Building a story around the
ideas used in training killer whales is particularly effective.
Leadership and Self-Deception: Getting
Out of the Box by
The Arbinger Institute
Another
well-done book that teaches through story-telling. This book
addresses our wonderful ability to fool ourselves and affect
others. It challenges us to be honest with ourselves and,
by doing so, build more effective and happier relationships.
I find
that the lessons in this book apply as readily to interpersonal
relationships as they do to leadership, management, and the
work environment.
Zen Lessons: The Art of Leadership
Translated by Thomas
Cleary
Cleary
consistently brings clear understanding to his translations
of classic works from Asia. This book addresses relationships
and conduct, contributing to the reader's ability to develop
the attributes of a leader. This one's a little harder to
get through, but worth the effort.
Who Moved My Cheese by
Spencer Johnson
This
book has been tremendously successful, in my opinion, due
to its simplicity and clarity. Reading it is easy, and the
ideas flow cleanly. Well worth the read for many reasons.
Gestures: The
DO's and TABOOs of Body Language Around the World
by Roger E. Axtell
Effective
communication is a key to effective leadership. Understanding
the elements of our communication, including the nonverbal,
is critical. This book, through exploring the meanings of
various gestures around the world, helps me to be sensitive
to all the levels of my communication.
