The
New Game Plan for Recovery: Rediscovering the Positive Power
of Play by
Tobin Quereau, Tom Zimmermann
Some
of us think the workplace is all about work and that we live
to work. This book enlightens and enlivens and reintroduces
us to the play that we knew so well before we "grew up."
Zapp! The Lightning of Empowerment:
How to Improve Productivity, Quality, and Employee Satisfaction
by William C.
Byham
As
leaders and managers, one of our most important roles is to
ensure that the people who work for and with us are able to
grow personally and professionally. Empowerment - providing
them with the understanding and the authority and the responsibility
for their part of the organization's success - is critical.
This
book explores the problems of disempowerment and the value
of empowerment in a clever and entertaining way.
The Tao of Pooh by
Benjamin Hoff
This
book is as hard to describe as Taoism itself. But I will say
that it is also in my must read list. It is enlightening
and challenging. The principles of Taoism and how they apply
to each of us are explored by Hoff using the characters of
Winnie the Pooh and his friends.

The 17 Indisputable
Laws of Teamwork by
John C. Maxwell
John
C. Maxwell has a clear, concise, and vivid manner of expressing
himself. In this book, one of many he has authored, Maxwell
lays out simple concepts that apply to anyone who leads or
participates in teams of any type - work, sports, family,
volunteer. There are many wonderful ideas in this book - here
are two of my favorites:
"Vision
without strategy is little more than a daydream." Wow!
I read this and just stopped to savor it.
"...that's
the value of intuitive passion. It brings the kind of heat
that fires up the committed--and fries the uncommitted."
I had to read this several times to really absorb it. Powerful
stuff!

The
Leadership Engine by
Noel M. Tichy
Noel
Tichy looks at what makes successful organizations - what
are the qualities of both the organization and the leader
that distinguishes between success and also-ran. This book,
published in 1997, takes lessons from some of the greatest,
most successful companies in history and distills them down
into simple lessons (my favorite kind).
